Czech Radio Brno 2019

Czech Radio Brno

Intern · Czech Radio

Three months full-time in a newsroom: research, ČTK wire monitoring and writing news under time pressure.

During my journalism studies, it was important to me to connect academic theory with hard-nosed practice. So I completed a three-month intensive internship at Czech Radio. This was no shadowing position, but full involvement in the newsroom’s day-to-day, eight hours a day, five days a week.

My daily bread became closely following current events and constantly monitoring the ČTK news wire. I moved at the centre of social and political topics, which perfectly satisfied my need to maintain a broad general overview. In practice this meant above all lightning-fast research, establishing connections, and writing punchy short news items where accuracy and speed are what matter most.

Part of my everyday work was also gathering information firsthand and recording respondents' statements. This experience taught me not only to react quickly to a shifting media agenda and to separate the essential from the noise, but also to communicate effectively and conduct interviews under significant time pressure.
