2024 MediaRating: a methodological handbook for libraries
7 ready-made activities that turn expert media-credibility ratings into a practical tool for libraries across the country.
The MediaRating tool from the Independent Journalism Foundation (NFNZ) assesses the trustworthiness of media outlets, but for a long time it mainly served a narrow group of experts and academics. As co-author of the educational methodology, I turned this robust tool into a practical handbook for libraries and schools.
It also includes a clear theoretical foundation, where I explain concepts like ownership transparency, working with sources, and distinguishing facts from opinions in plain, human language. Every expert concept is grounded in everyday practice, so that anyone can understand it without needing prior journalism training.
In the prepared educational activities, participants try out the role of a media detective, tracking down publisher ownership or analysing hidden advertising and misleading headlines firsthand.
Education has to work in real-world delivery. So before publishing, I tested every procedure with dozens of students, teachers, and librarians from across the country. The result is a flexible set of seven fully developed educational activities that can be put into a programme immediately, without heavy preparation.
Thanks to this work, media evaluation doesn’t stay on paper. An expert tool becomes an accessible format for the general public, and libraries genuinely strengthen their position as confident educational centres for developing critical thinking.
